Notably, a significant agreement was reached to establish the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Chennai. This agreement was inked during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's three-day visit to China in May 2015, fostering closer ties between the two populous nations. In a similar vein, the government of Bangladesh confirmed its plans to open a consulate in Chennai in August 2017, with expectations of its operation commencing before the end of 2019. This move is anticipated to facilitate a stronger connection between Bangladesh and southern India, promoting economic and cultural interactions. Furthermore, plans from countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Egypt to establish their own diplomatic consulates in Chennai underscore the city's strategic importance as a hub for international diplomacy and trade in the region.
Current Diplomatic Missions

The city hosts the Consulate General of Australia, established in 1995, and the Consulate General of Japan, which dates back to 1966, highlighting the long-standing relations these nations share with India.
